Abiomed is a leading manufacturer of blood pumps used during open heart surgery. The AB5000 is a mobile console that drives the pumps via pressurized air lines. Design goals for this project included ease of transport in ambulances and helicopters, and ease of patient mobility. By allowing the heart patient to push the console around after surgery, the post operative recovery time is greatly diminished. In addition to optimizing the internal and external components to achieve the best size and usability for the medical technicians, the console was given a pleasant, friendly aesthetic that would encourage patient use.
